Thomas Detry WITB - Phoenix Waste Management Open (6th February, 2025) - What's In The Bag?

Who is Thomas Detry?

Thomas Detry. The Belgian bomber. The man who swings a golf club like it personally owes him money. Born on January 13, 1993, in Brussels, Belgium, Detry has carved out a reputation as one of the most exciting European golfers in the game today. He’s the kind of player who can go from deadpan chill to absolutely torching a golf course in the blink of an eye.

Unlike many of his fellow pros, Detry didn’t come from a country where golf is the national obsession. Belgium is more famous for waffles, beer, and questionable driving than producing world-class golfers. But Detry, much like his fellow countryman Thomas Pieters, decided to break that mold. He played his collegiate golf at the University of Illinois, where he became an All-American and turned heads with his silky-smooth swing and ability to make birdies in bulk.

Detry turned professional in 2016 and wasted no time making his mark. He quickly became a force on the Challenge Tour, securing his first professional win at the 2016 Bridgestone Challenge with a ridiculous 29-under-par performance. Yes, you read that right—29 under. That’s the kind of score that makes weekend hackers cry themselves to sleep.

Since then, Detry has been grinding on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, racking up top-10 finishes and establishing himself as a serious contender whenever he tees it up. His game is a mix of raw power, crisp iron play, and a putting stroke that can get scorching hot at the right time. He’s still hunting for that elusive first PGA Tour win, but rest assured, when it happens, it’s going to be spectacular.

Thomas Detry’s Biography and Phoenix Waste Management Open Performances

Thomas Detry’s journey in professional golf has been a steady rise toward the top. From his days in the Belgian junior golf scene to dominating on the Challenge Tour and now competing on the biggest stages in the world, he’s proven he has what it takes to win at the highest level. He has represented Belgium in events like the World Cup of Golf and the Olympics, showing that he thrives under pressure and loves competing against the best.

When it comes to the Phoenix Waste Management Open, Detry has embraced the chaos like a pro. TPC Scottsdale’s famous 16th hole is golf’s equivalent of Thunderdome—boozy fans, loud chants, and an atmosphere more suited to a football game than a golf tournament. But Detry doesn’t just survive in that environment—he thrives in it. His performances at the event have been solid, with flashes of brilliance that suggest he could be a serious threat for the title in the near future.

His game is perfectly suited for a birdie-fest like the Waste Management Open. He can bomb it off the tee, attack pins with aggressive iron shots, and if the putter heats up, he can go seriously low. The only thing standing between Detry and a big win at TPC Scottsdale is a bit of luck and the ability to close out on Sunday. But if his track record is anything to go by, that win is coming sooner rather than later.
