Who is Brian Harman?
Brian Harman is golf's ultimate underdog-turned-silent assassin. At 5-foot-7 and left-handed, he's not your prototypical bomber, but don't let the height fool you—this guy will absolutely wreck your leaderboard dreams while looking like he just finished cutting his own lawn and gutting a whitetail with the same knife.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1987, Harman was raised on grit, SEC football, and a healthy disrespect for anyone who doubted his size. He played college golf at the University of Georgia, where he majored in biology, presumably in case the pro tour thing didn’t work out and he had to become a wildlife biologist or build a cabin with his bare hands. He’s been a consistent grinder ever since, playing with a chip on his shoulder and a short game sharp enough to perform surgery.
Harman is that guy your fantasy league ignores until he shows up in a major and ruins everyone's Sunday. He finally silenced all the doubters at the 2023 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, where he dominated with Jedi-level putting and "you can't break me" mental toughness. He didn’t just win; he demoralized a field of bombers, influencers, and dudes with 120mph swing speeds by wedging and putting them into submission like a southern golf samurai.
Also worth noting: Brian is a certified outdoorsman. He hunts. He fishes. He butchers. He’s probably more comfortable in a tree stand than in a clubhouse, and he’d 100% be the guy to survive a zombie apocalypse with a 9-iron and a can of Copenhagen.
Brian Harman’s Golf Bag & Equipment
Driver: Titleist TSi2 9° – Graphite Design Tour AD IZ 5S Shaft Harman opts for a more forgiving driver setup that gives him maximum accuracy off the tee. He’s not going to outdrive Rory, but he’ll out-position you all day. This combo keeps him in play and under control—like a precision scalpel for tee shots.
3 Wood: Titleist TS2 13.5° – Fujikura Speeder 661 Evolution II S Shaft This thing is basically Harman’s sniper rifle. He uses it to pick off fairways and tight landing zones like he's in a video game and never misses a headshot.
5 Wood: Titleist TS2 16.5° – Fujikura Speeder 661 Evolution II S Shaft A reliable fairway finder with enough pop to attack par 5s or rescue a hole when things get a little squirrelly. Harman keeps it steady, just like his post-round bourbon.
Irons: Titleist U-500 (3-5), Titleist 620 CB (6-PW) – Project X HZRDUS Smoke Black 90 (3&4), True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S300 (6-PW) These aren’t flashy clubs. They’re surgical tools. Harman uses the U-500 long irons for consistency and forgiveness while dialing in tight fades and stingers, then transitions to his 620 CBs to fire darts like he’s got a laser scope.
Wedges: Titleist Vokey Design SM9 50° (08F), 54° (10S), Vokey Wedgeworks 60° (04L) – True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 Shafts This wedge setup is the short game equivalent of a Leatherman multitool. He can clip flags, nip chips, and blast out of bunkers like he’s rehearsed it in a sandpit behind his house.
Putter: TaylorMade Spider 5K-ZT This mallet weapon helped carry him to the Open title. It’s stable, it’s square, and when it’s hot, it's game over. He might not look flashy, but this flatstick gets the job done with cold-blooded consistency.
Ball: Titleist Pro V1 The old reliable. Just like Harman—boring until it starts beating everyone.
Grip: Golf Pride Tour Velvet Classic, clean, no-nonsense. Like Brian himself.
Brian Harman’s Biography & PGA Tour Journey
Brian Harman turned pro in 2009 and has carved out a quietly effective career built on hustle, heart, and the short game of a wizard. He picked up his first PGA Tour win at the 2014 John Deere Classic and has been a consistent contender ever since, particularly on courses that reward precision over power.
Harman is the anti-Instagram golfer. While the world was distracted by trackman numbers and TikTok swing coaches, Brian was grinding. He’s always had elite putting and a work ethic that’s somewhere between "southern dad building a deck" and "rocky montage." But it wasn’t until The Open in 2023 that everything came together. That week, he looked like a left-handed Terminator with a broomstick.
That victory vaulted him into a new tier of respect, and he followed it with a Ryder Cup appearance and a boatload of confidence. But like any grinder, the path hasn’t been all birdies and claret jugs. Harman’s recent form going into the 2024 Valero Texas Open has been a bit hit-and-miss. He’s made cuts but hasn’t exactly been scorching hot—until now. As of Saturday, he holds the third-round lead at TPC San Antonio, looking more and more like the guy who shut down Royal Liverpool with a putting stroke that made grown men cry.
If Harman can close the deal this week, it’ll be further proof that you don’t need to be 6'3" and jacked to win on Tour. Sometimes all it takes is a cold putter, a sharp wedge, and the mental fortitude of a man who cleans his own kills.
